Essentials: Putting together a survival kit

Essentials kits can help you respond to natural disasters or other serious situations. Prepare for the unexpected with a survival kit that can come in handy if you need to evacuate your home. Gather enough supplies for three days and keep everything you need on hand in case of an emergency. Make sure your family members know where to find the kit. Also consider keeping basic essentials in your car.

The basic emergency kit includes:

Small waterproof flashlight or headlamp and extra batteries
waterproof matches
Water, 1 gallon per person per day
Food that does not spoil, including baby food if needed
Manual food can opener
Pet food and supplies such as a leash if needed
Small notepad and waterproof writing instrument
Blanket
Mobile phone with solar charging
Battery or manual radio and weather radio with tone alarm and extra batteries for both
Insect repellent

First aid kit
respirator
Plastic film and duct tape for impromptu hiding
Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
Medicine, week supply
Additional medical supplies or equipment, as needed
Soap, toothbrush, feminine supplies and other personal hygiene items
Wet wipes, trash bags and plastic ties for personal hygiene
Emergency medical information for you and your family
Phone numbers for professional emergency contacts such as your family doctor and pediatrician
Telephone numbers for personal emergency contact, such as a friend or family member you have asked to fill this role.
Copy of insurance cards
Cash or travelers checks and change
Area maps
Extra set of car keys and house keys

A gardening friend told me that I have a weed called goutweed in my garden. Now that I’ve taken a closer look at the beds, it’s spreading through my shaded garden and even into the lawn and other sunnier beds. What is the best way to get rid of this weed?

Snotweed (Aegopodium podagraria) is a vigorous invasive perennial that spreads rapidly by underground stems called rhizomes and can take over the garden and outcompete garden plants as well as native plants in natural areas. Rooted gout is very competitive in shaded areas in cultivated gardens and natural forests. Plots of this plant will grow in size as the root system expands. You may also not notice it right away, as with other types of weeds. There is a cultivated form called bishop’s weed or snow on the mountain (Aegopodium podagraria ‘Variegatum’) with variegated leaves that is sold at some garden centers and will also be invasive in your garden. Sometimes it becomes solid green or a mixture of solid green and a lighter variegated pattern. Naturalized plants will have green foliage. The flowers are white and last for about a month, from late spring to mid-summer. Better not to plant it in your garden.

Small areas of goutweed can be eliminated by carefully and persistently pulling by hand or by digging up whole plants along with the rhizomes. Plants usually break at ground level if you try to pull them up when the soil is dry. Even a small piece of rhizome can regrow into a new plant, so be sure to remove as much of the root system as possible and dispose of it, burn it or bag it and throw it in the trash can. It is best not to put plants in the compost heap. Be careful to clear any rhizomes that may re-root and grow new plants if left lying on the soil. Continue to monitor the area and aggressively pull out plants that will continue to grow for several years. Consistent removal from month to month over several years is critical to controlling this weed by hand pulling.

Systemic herbicides such as glyphosate (Roundup), which travel to the roots and kill the entire plant, are effective in controlling sera. Be sure to follow the directions on the label and avoid spraying any nearby desired plants that will also be killed by the herbicide. In my experience, it will take several herbicide treatments to eradicate the gout spot. I started spraying goutweed in my garden three years ago and most of it has already disappeared, but it is still growing in the same area after more than six applications of herbicides. I use a broadleaf herbicide to spray my lawn gout because I don’t want to kill the grass. You can also try covering the gout with black sheeting in early spring to prevent photosynthesis. The plastic needs to stay in place for most of the summer to provide decent control. This method will not be practical in most situations.
